Garden Club updates

Spring has sprung!

posted May 11, 2016, 5:15 AM by Nancy Miller12

The garden club is in full swing now that spring has finally arrived.  We meet Monday and Thursday afternoons from 3 - 4:15.  The first week was a wash out, but we had fun planting inside.  This week we have been out in the garden getting our beds ready for planting and putting in the lettuce, spinach and kale.  Our garlic has thrived over the winter and should be putting out scapes in the next few weeks. We also have some special friends from The PInes joining us in the garden this year.  It is great fun to see the generations interacting and working in the garden together.

Winter in the Garden

The garden is resting now.  The kids applied some nice rich compost and planted winter oats to improve our soil while the snow falls.  In March we will begin planting seedlings in the classrooms.  Look for our Spring seed sale information in April!  Only $1 for a packet of sunflower or marigold seeds saved from our school garden.

It is Spring!

Garden Club will be held on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:05 - 4:15 this spring.  The Tuesday group will start on May 6th and go until June 16th.  The Thursday group will begin on May 8th and go until June 18th.  We will be sending home permission slips next week.  The gardeners will be chosen from all the slips returned by April 23rd.  We wished we could take everyone, but our garden is small.  All the children do get a chance to spend time in the garden with their regular class.  We look forward to seeing everyone out in the garden!

Garden Update: 10/16/14

Despite the rain, Garden Club had an exciting day today! This year we tried growing popcorn and today we got to try it out. We placed the ears in a brown paper bag and microwaved them for a minute and a half. Then we stood back to see what would happen and...

It worked! We had popcorn!

We also enjoyed our acorn squash and a salad for snack.

Seed Saving
Garden Club members have been busy saving seeds for next year. We will be planting some of them in the spring, but we will be selling sunflower and marigold seeds at school to raise money for the Garden Club.

The Garden Club would like to thank Chris Cote and Amy Gendreau for their help in assembling our new shed! We could not have done it without their help.

Garden Club meets on Monday and Thursday afternoons from 3:05 until 4:15. The Thursday group will start on Thursday, September 4th. The Monday group will start on Monday September 8th. Hope to see you out in the Garden!

Thanks to the NES summer school, the Linked Together Program and the volunteer families who help keep our garden healthy over the summer so we can all enjoy the fall harvest.

Thanks to the NCEP we have a new outdoor sink so our gardeners can wash the dirt off their hands.
