Please read attached note from Principal Sean Pine.

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Newmarket Elementary School students in grades 3-5 will be participating in the state administered Smarter Balanced Assessments in Mathematics and English Language Arts/Literacy beginning March 16th. This assessment replaces the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP), which your child may have previously participated in.

The Smarter Balanced Assessments are intended to provide an academic checkup by measuring real-world skills like critical thinking and problem solving along with a students’ proficiency of the grade level standards. This assessment differs from previous statewide assessments in many ways: The assessment is web-based, and adaptive. Based on student responses, the question difficulty is adjusted throughout the assessment. Children needing designated supports and accommodations will have these embedded into their testing experience. More information about the assessment is available on the New Hampshire Smarter Balanced Portal at http://nh.portal.airast.org/.

Students in the third and fourth grade will be assessed during the weeks of March 16th and 23rd. Fifth grade students will be assessed during the weeks of March 30th and April 6th. During the assessment window your child will be participating in four 90 minute assessment session.

How can you help us? Please make sure our child is prepared for the assessment by making sure they have eaten a well balance breakfast, are well rested and arrive at school on time. Thank you for supporting your child and our school during the testing period.
